The Medicare Marketing Guidelines
Did you know that Medicare has strict rules in place that are meant to protect retirees like you? These rules are published in a document called the Medicare Marketing Guidelines and are very specific about how companies and individuals are allowed to market and sell Medicare plans.
How are Retirees at Risk?
Medicare guidelines are in place to protect you. Unfortunately, there are many agents who seek to take advantage of retirees. Unethical agents may show up at your door uninvited or may try to get you to buy an insurance plan as you are entering or leaving your home. Often, they will not be honest about the benefits of the plan they are selling or may not check that your doctors and medications will be covered by the plan.
Knowledge is Power!
These kinds of behaviors are specifically against Medicare’s guidelines. But because many retirees do not know the guidelines, it is common for them to be caught off guard by these agents and enroll into a health plan that does not meet their needs. Unfortunately, we often hear these kinds of stories from retirees.
The Medicare Marketing Guidelines lists many different rules. It can be hard to keep track of them all! But we can give you one general rule of thumb to help you protect yourself and your loved ones. Agents must always have your permission to meet with you and/or sell you a Medicare plan. Without your consent, they are prohibited from knocking on your door in an attempt to sell you a plan. And you are never required to enroll into a plan with them.
